FarmHack is a community of farmers and growers developing appropriate tools for small scale ecological farming. It was founded by The Greenhorns in the USA in 2010 and has since held regular events to bring the community together on farms and in workshops across the USA.
FarmHack is founded on the principles of open source technology meaning that tools and techniques are also shared and developed on the online forum farmhack.net
On Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th April 2015, The Landworkers Alliance will be hosting the first ever FarmHack event outside of North America at Ruskin Mill Farm, Gloucestershire.
The event will bring together farmers, growers, fabricators, engineers and IT programmers to demonstrate and share tools, skills and ideas. Over the two days there will be field demonstrations, practical workshops, seminars, entertainment, good food, local ale and a stomping ceilidh.
The Saturday will feature field scale demonstrations with tractor-mounted tools, horse-drawn and hand tools plus various practical workshops including blacksmithing, welding, woodworking and discussions on food hubs, technology and farm water management. Sunday will include details of projects and future events as well as a tour around Ruskin Farm, where the event is being held. For full details of the programme visit http://landworkersalliance.org.uk/farmhack/
In order to put on the event and provide good quality local food we are asking for a mandatory contribution of £15 per person, this covers Saturday breakfast, lunch and dinner, Sunday breakfast and camping at Ruskin Mill farm for Friday night and Saturday night. Please note you’re encouraged to arrive on the evening of Friday 17th April for a bring and share dinner in order to make a prompt start on the Saturday morning.
There will also be a paying bar on the Friday and Saturday selling fantastic local ale and cider at £3 a pint to help cover costs - so please bring a little extra cash.
Booking is essential and can be completed online HERE. In return you will receive an email with further details and directions, a vehicle parking permit and four meal tickets at the event registration on the Saturday morning.
Can You Help?
At present we have a dedicated handful of farmers & growers who are willing to travel to Ruskin for the weekend to demonstrate tools and machinery they have fabricated themselves, however, we would like many more!
Please help us to spread the word, especially to those who have appropriate tools and machinery to demonstrate. There are also a couple of free slots in the workshop sessions for anyone who has ideas, theories or technology of benefit to the FarmHack community.
We are also offering a limited number of free tickets to photographers and film-makers who would like to come and document the event. Please contact Ed directly on 07858 381539 or [email protected] if you would like to present at FarmHack UK.
