Aloe vera has anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and moisturising properties, which makes it useful in skincare.

Aloe vera is a plant famous for its healing and soothing properties. Why are health and beauty experts so fascinated with this plant? What can aloe vera do for us?

One of the most incredible benefits of aloe vera (except for our general internal health, of course) is its ability to improve your skin.

The large leaves of the Aloe Vera plant are full of a type of clear and thick gel which is exactly what will help heal and soothe your skin. Millions of people all over the world have tried Aloe Vera skincare, and now they have their own aloe plants at home.

The skin blessings of the aloe vera plant are multiple, ranging from anti-inflammatory, moisturizing, open wound healing, anti-aging, minimizing blemishes and pores, to fighting acne and healing sunburns.

Here is a list of the five most amazing skin benefits of aloe vera as well as some tips on how you can grow your own at home!

5 Amazing Skin Benefits of Aloe Vera

● Heals burns fast

Aloe vera can help with all types of skin burns, especially sunburns in the summer. These powers of aloe come from its cooling and anti-inflammatory properties which can literally absorb the temperature from the sunburned skin.

Additionally, aloe is packed full of minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants which will speed up the skin healing process. All in all, aloe vera is essential in the summer months. Many after-sun lotions are based on aloe vera as its main ingredient, mostly because of these cooling features. However, if you have the opportunity and possibility, use pure aloe vera gel from the leaves.

● Fast healing of wounds and cuts

Whether it’s an open wound from a pimple or an accidental cut with a kitchen knife, aloe vera can be used to help you heal faster.

Aloe vera accelerates the production of new skin cells and is absorbed by your skin even faster than water. Thus, the gel of aloe is the perfect cure for wounds and cuts.

By healing the skin cells around the wound and preventing infectious processes from taking place, aloe can speed up your recovery time by more than half. So, whenever you have wounds or cuts, try a regular application of aloe gel.

● Skin moisturizing

One incredibly useful feature of the aloe vera gel is its role as a powerful moisturizer. Namely, this gel gets quickly absorbed into the skin and increases its water content supply.

Since aloe vera is not an oil-based, it's incredible for people who suffer from the greasy and oily skin as well as people who are prone to acne breakouts. The aloe will moisturize and hydrate your skin without blocking your pores.

As such, aloe vera can be an amazing moisturizer for people who often suffer from chronic skin problems such as eczema and psoriasis.

● Acne fighting

The healing and anti-inflammatory properties of aloe we mentioned above are the reason why this plant is such an effective acne-fighting weapon.

Aside from preventing acne with its anti-inflammatory function, aloe will prevent scarring and acne marks thanks to its healing properties. The production of new skin cells will be accelerated, and your skin will become clearer than ever.

● Anti-aging effects

Finally, the last most impressive feature of aloe vera for skin is its anti-aging power. This plant contains many different vitamins and antioxidants such as Beta Carotene, Vitamin E, Vitamin C, and many more.

These vitamins will feed your skin and increase its moisture content and elasticity. Thus, preventing and minimizing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

How to Grow Your Own Aloe Vera Plant

Location: Aloe vera plants can be grown either indoors or outdoors. However, there are some certain considerations and precautions you need to remember.

If you decide to grow your aloe outdoors, be aware that it can freeze during winter (depending on your country’s climate). This means that you will have to bring it in during this period.
On the other hand, if you grow your plant indoors, make sure that it has enough indirect sunlight. Aloe needs 8-10 hours of indirect sunlight because direct sunlight can dry and brown the plant’s leaves.

Soil: These plants prefer a dry soil like cacti. This means that you can either buy a cactus mixture or make your own by combining soil, sand, and gravel.

Furthermore, make sure that the container or pot you grow your aloe in has draining holes at the bottom so that it doesn’t retain water. Their roots do not like being sat in water.

Water: One very common mistake is overwatering your aloe plant. Aloe doesn’t need much water. In fact, when you first plant your aloe in a container, give it some time for the roots to adjust before you start watering. Rotting of the root is common if you overwatered your plant, and this is a problem that is difficult to overcome once it occurs. The soil of the aloe vera plant should be allowed to go completely dry before being watered. When the aloe plant is watered, the soil should be thoroughly drenched, but the water should be allowed to drain freely from the soil.

As long as the aloe leaves are thick, supple, and cold to the touch, your plant has enough water. If the leaves start becoming thin, brittle and start curling, the plant needs more water.
In any case, the soil should always be damp as opposed to soaking wet!

Space: Aloe vera plants should have enough space to grow. They have short roots but robust and heavy leaves, which means they should be transferred to a heavier pot as they start growing. If the pot where the aloe is planted doesn't have enough space for the plant to grow outwards, it will instead start to produce young "pups" which can be then transferred to their own pots and containers.
