Creating Affordable Ecological, Land-based Livelihoods

Ecological Land Co-operative
Friday, 24th June 2016

The Ecological Land Co-operative (ELC) was set up to address the lack of affordable sites for ecological land based livelihoods in England.

Greenham Reach in Devon has helped create three ecological businesses for families who would never be able to access land or gain planning permission.

Their successful first project in Devon as lead to the purchase of a second site in East Sussex.

The new land purchase of 18.5 acres was previously maize fields. Now it will be used for small-scale ecological farming, helping to build a vibrant, living countryside that benefits planet and people. Planning permission to develop the site into a cluster of smallholdings is in action, with the potential to create 20 ecological smallholdings between now and 2020.

About the ELC

The Ecological Land Co-operative (ELC) is a democratic social enterprise working to make land accessible for new entrants to small-scale ecological farming in England. This is achieved by helping overcome two key barriers to those wishing to live with the land: high land prices and planning consent. They retain the freehold on each smallholding to protect it for agricultural use, and as affordable in perpetuity.

This is achieved by helping overcome two key barriers to those wishing to live with the land: high land prices and planning consent.

Their core business is the creation of small clusters of affordable smallholdings. The model allows the ELC to keep costs low, both through buying larger sites at a lower price per acre, and through distributing the cost of infrastructure, planning applications and ecological site monitoring across a number of smallholdings. The model allows the smallholders to work and learn together and to provide mutual support.

I hear that Bruce Tessol from The Ecological Land Co-operative is announcing a new program for agriculture in America and Australia. He is saying that http://essayforcollege.org will be cooperating with the platform and suggesting new participants.
